The older we get, the busier life becomes, and the less time we have for the things we enjoy. Which is why it is so important to MAKE the time for yourself! One thing I enjoy doing in my “me time” is reading. For the last few years, however, with college and PA school, the only things I was finding time to read were textbooks. The problem with reading is that it is such a singular activity. You can’t really multi-task while reading a book. Yes, that is the draw for some people. It is nice cuddling up in your favorite chair with some coffee to relax and delve the world of the book you are reading, but lately I am all about the multi-tasking. I don’t have a lot of free time, so the spare minutes I do have are well spent when I can get multiple things done at once. That’s where audiobooks come in.
I discovered audiobooks sometime last year when I had a long eleven hour car drive by myself back home to New Orleans. I don’t care how much Pandora might be killin’ it on your favorite station that day, eleven hours of even the best music can be a bit much. To break up the monotony, I created an account on Audible and downloaded my very first audiobook. I was hesitant at first, because it felt strange listening to the book instead of seeing the words myself. But after the first few chapters, I was hooked!
Audiobooks aren’t only for long road trips though. I like to plug in my headphones and listen to some chapters while I have to do menial tasks like dishes and laundry. A few of my clinical rotations have been an hour drive each way, and the audio books make the trips and traffic much more bearable. I love the fact that I can listen to books while getting other things done. I have “read” about 15 books in the past year this way, which is MUCH more than I would have had time to read by actually reading.
Audible charges a monthly fee, and in return you can choose a plan with a certain amount of credits given per month. The credits are good for any one audiobook. The books are yours too keep forever, even if you cancel the account. You can also cancel the account at any time if you build up too many credits. It is a really great deal, especially since audiobooks can be pretty pricey ($20-30 a pop).
I partnered with Amazon to give you a 30 day free trial of Audible with TWO FREE AUDIOBOOKS! This is a great opportunity to see if audiobooks are for you. And it’s free, so why not?! Check it out here.
